A woman who went viral over the weekend for slapping a traffic police officer in Kampala has been remanded to Luzira prison.
Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha was captured on video on Saturday slapping a traffic police officer who had stopped her for speaking on the phone while driving.
On Monday afternoon, Bashisha, a public relations officer at the NRM secretariate a was arraigned before the Chief Magistrates Court in Nakawa alongside Bernardine Abangira and charges related to robbery, reckless driving, failure to comply with police directives and using a motor vehicle on the road without a third party insurance slapped against her.
Her co-accused was also charged with robbery and being accessory to a felony.
Prosecution led Mariam Kuluthum alleges that Timbitwire Mercy and Abangira Bernadine committed the alleged offences on October, 18, 2024 at UMA Show Ground, Nakawa Division; Makerere University Business School along Port Bell road in Kampala and at Lugogo along Kampala- Jinja high way in Kampala District.
It is further alleged that the accused women robbed PC Charles Makawa of his two mobile phones valued at shs800,000 and an EPS Printer Machine valued at 14 million shillings, using personal violence to the Police Officer.
The duo however denied the charges but the prosecutor said investigations into the matter were complete.
Chief Magistrate Elias Kakooza who remanded the duo to Luzira prison until November, 4 when hearing of their case will begin.
The magistrate also ordered prosecution to avail all evidence to the defence lawyers to enable the trial to kick off.
During the court session of Monday, several traffic police officers including the victim thronged court to stand in solidarity with their colleague.
