Police have said a number of Ugandans on social media are sharing doctored and recycled videos showing flying kick assailants attacking members of the public.
Updating the country on the security situation, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said they were thrown aback when a 2022 video made rounds on social media showing flying kick members attacking a man along Buganda Road in Kampala.
“It is a concerning trend that people cant distinguish what happened way back and take interest. The bad part of it is that when we verify the facts surrounding these videos, they are not shared at the same pace like the old recycled videos. The public doesn’t share the corrected version like they do to the disturbing videos,” Enanga said.
He said that in the wake of the recent wave of violent attacks by flying kick assailants, police deployed heavily both uniformed and non-uniform officers leading to reduction in these types of crimes.
Enanga said in the past two or so weeks, they have not registered any incident of Kungfu attacks.
The police however said a number of social media users are sharing either fake or recycled videos that they claim are latest.
“Others get videos of violence from other countries and using AI they create deep fake videos and try to customize them as those happened in the country. We warn the public against recycling of old videos of violent attacks and torture,” Enanga said.
“We are aware the perpetuators aim at stocking fear and panic among the public but we want. We call upon al people on digital platforms to be vigilant and critical while scrutinizing information. We need to be responsible while consuming and sharing information in this digital age.”
