Police in Kampala have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which over 200 Ugandans were conned of over shs1.5 billion in a scam involving fake jobs in Canada.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, the managers of Oley Oliga 2024 are currently on the run after fleecing unsuspecting members of the public.
“It is alleged that the company that goes by the name Oley Oliga 2024 obtained between shs6 million to shs20 million from different people after promising them job opportunities in Canada,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police say that the unsuspecting members of the public in the areas of Bulaga and Bulenga were asked to pay in order to be taken abroad for work and on top of the money, they paid for medical checkup and that after paying, the company closed.
“Some of these people had resigned from their places of work so that they could be taken abroad. They even reached the airport, only to realise it was a scheme put up to steal their money.”
Owoyesigyire said one Rashid Kawooya who has been a field manager for the company has been arrested to aid in investigations , noting that the prime suspect, Oley Gitta, the managing director of the company is currently on the run.
“Police are investigating a case of obtaining money by false pretence. We suspect the entire sum lost by unsuspecting members of the public can go above shs1.5 billion since some were being asked to pay shs6 million, others shs14 million and others paid shs20 million.”
