Uganda Prisons Services has said their new camouflage uniform that was officially unveiled in Busia during the 62nd independence celebrations is not replacing the maroon one.
Following the unveiling of the new uniform, a number of commentators on social media have made a fuss about it with many making insinuations about the motivation behind the uniform.
Addressing journalists on Monday, Prisons spokesperson , Frank Baine explained that the camouflage uniform is not replacing the old one but rather for one of their units.
“This new segment of our uniform is for our unit called safety and security specifically trained to guard key installations, VVIPs and also escort hard core criminals,” Baine said.
“We came up with this new segment of uniform because of the nature of this unit’s job sometimes involves maneuvers which cant be done in the other light uniform. Therefore, the new segment of uniform was designed to help the unit execute its duties easily.”
Baine explained the new camouflage uniform has patches of Maroon, Khaki Brown, Lemon Khaki and Black which are all part of the original uniform of the prisons.
He however noted that the new camouflage uniform is not for every prison warder but rather those in the safety and security unit of Uganda Prisons Services.
He said the commissioner general is from time to time permitted to have a segment of uniform that works for a specific unit.
According to Baine, the normal prisons uniform remains in place and will be donned by other warders, save for those in the safety and security unit.
