The Uganda Cranes were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against South Africa after a last-minute equalizer by the hosts in their opening group game of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on Friday.
The match, played at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg, saw South Africa take an early lead just 13 minutes into the game with a goal from Lyle Foster. The home side dominated the first half and went into the break with the advantage.
In the second half, Uganda’s coach Paul Put made a crucial tactical change by bringing on Allan Okello to replace Travis Mutyaba in midfield. The move quickly paid off, as Denis Omedi scored the equalizer for the Cranes just six minutes into the second half. Two minutes later, Rogers Mato unleashed a powerful strike in the 53rd minute, putting Uganda ahead 2-1.
However, the Cranes were unable to hold off South Africa’s relentless pressure, and in injury time, Thalente Mbotha found the back of the net to level the score at 2-2, ensuring both teams shared the spoils.
