Uganda’s rich culture and tourism potential took center stage during its 62nd Independence celebrations in China, captivating audiences at the Kempinski Hotel in Beijing and the Great Wall of China.
The Uganda Embassy in Beijing, in collaboration with the Consulate General in Guangzhou, hosted the “Explore Uganda” campaign on October 12 and 13, spotlighting Uganda as a top destination for tourism and investment.
The celebrations began with a grand reception at the prestigious Kempinski Hotel in Beijing on October 12, attended by over 300 guests.
The special envoy for the Eastern Horn of Africa, Ambassador Xue Bing, graced the event as the guest of honor. Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, Uganda’s envoy to China, delivered a powerful message about the country’s tourism appeal.
“Uganda, the Pearl of Africa, offers experiences unlike anywhere else,” Wonekha said, citing the country’s incredible wildlife, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture.
“Our Big Five, stunning national parks, and welcoming people make Uganda a prime destination for Chinese travelers seeking adventure and relaxation.”
The evening featured cultural performances by Ugandan dancers, an aromatic display of Uganda’s premium coffee, and an immersive showcase of the country’s famous tourist attractions, including Murchison Falls, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Lake Victoria.
The celebration continued the next day at the Great Wall of China’s Badaling section, where over 50,000 visitors witnessed Uganda’s cultural dances and explored a branded booth promoting the country’s key tourist sites, coffee, and crafts.
Hourly performances and giveaways of branded souvenirs such as caps and water bottles enhanced Uganda’s visibility as a must-visit destination for Chinese tourists.
Ambassador Judyth Nsababera, Consul General of Uganda in Guangzhou, emphasized the importance of these celebrations in strengthening Uganda-China relations, particularly in tourism and investment.
“Uganda has vast potential—not only as a tourist hotspot but also as a growing hub for investment in agro-processing, manufacturing, and mineral value addition,” Nsababera said.
The “Explore Uganda” events showcased the country’s commitment to promoting tourism, which plays a critical role in job creation and boosting foreign exchange earnings. Coffee exports, another key focus, continue to provide livelihoods for millions of Ugandans.
As the celebrations drew to a close, both diplomatic missions reaffirmed their commitment to fostering deeper ties with China, with the goal of attracting more tourists and investors to Uganda.
Ambassador Wonekha expressed optimism about the future of Uganda-China relations, saying, “Let us continue to deepen our partnership in tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges. Together, we can build a prosperous future that benefits both Uganda and China.”
