Uganda registered a 19.2% decrease in traffic-related offenses in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the newly released Annual Crime Report 2024 by the Uganda Police Force.
The report, launched today by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abas Byakagaba, highlights both achievements and ongoing concerns in road safety and crime reduction.
Speaking at the launch, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Lawrence Nuwabiine, the Director of Traffic and Road Safety, stated that traffic offenses recorded in 2024 totaled 426,432 cases, a significant drop from 528,025 cases in 2023.
However, despite this decline, road traffic crashes increased by 6.4% over the same period.
AIGP Nuwabiine noted that more crashes occurred during the day than at night, a trend also reflected in fatal accidents.
“Most fatal crashes happened in daylight hours, suggesting a need for increased enforcement and road safety awareness during peak travel times,” he emphasized.
The report further reveals that careless overtaking and speeding were the primary causes of road crashes in 2024. These two factors alone accounted for 44.5% of all reported crashes.
“We continue to urge motorists to exercise caution on the roads, avoid reckless overtaking, and adhere to speed limits. Road safety remains a shared responsibility,” Nuwabiine added.
