Thousands of Ugandans living in the United Arab Emirates illegally have a few hours left to either formalize their stay or face arrest by authorities in the gulf country.
A number of Ugandans are staying in UAE illegally without official documents.
A notice by the presidential advisor in charge of diaspora affairs, Abbey Walusimbi last week indicated that the amnesty granted to Ugandans living illegally in the UAE expires today, December 31.
“We are writing to remind all Ugandan citizens in the UAE with expired visas and recently declined visas that the UAE’s amnesty program ends December 31. We strongly encourage you to return to Uganda before this date to avoid potential difficulties,” the notice said in part.
Earlier this year, the UAE government gave a 90-day amnesty period for Ugandans who are staying illegally in the country.
A number of Ugandans have either overstayed their visas, others are using tourist visas while others have never got any form of visa from the UAE authorities.
However, with the deadline looming, many are now facing the consequences of overstaying or living without valid visas.
In response to the growing concerns, the Ugandan government has been urging its citizens to take advantage of the remaining hours to comply with the UAE’s immigration policies.
Those who fail to adhere to the guidelines risk facing legal actions including fines or imprisonment, as the UAE continues to enforce strict immigration laws.
The UAE, an oil-rich nation known for its bustling economy and large migrant workforce, has been offering amnesty to illegal immigrants as part of its ongoing efforts to address undocumented labor.
Ugandans, like many other foreign nationals, make up a significant portion of the workforce in the country, often employed in construction, hospitality, and domestic work.
