The number of Ugandan men opting for vasectomy has gone up, statistics have shown.
Vasectomy is a permanent family planning method for men that stops sperms from being injected into semen.
During the procedure, male vessels that carry sperms from the testicles are cut and tied so as to prevent sperm from entering into the urethra.
This prevents the fertilization of a female through sexual intercourse.
According to data from the District Health Information Software report the number of vasectomies performed last year rose to 7,120 from the 2,414 done in 2022.
This according to medics, shows growing awareness and acceptance towards vasectomy.
Speaking to journalists at a meeting organised by Wellbeing Valor and Dedicated Health Initiative Uganda,
Dr. Fred Ssentongo from Marie Stopes Uganda said there are many myths about vasectomy but said they are unfounded, asking members of the public to disregard them.
“We are seeing the number growing day by day unlike in the past despite the myths and misconceptions. Seeing over 7000 men going for vasectomy shows so much progress,” Dr.Ssentongo said.
He said most men who opt for vasectomy are between the ages of 30 and 50 who feel they no longer want to give birth to children or have reached the desired number.
Jonathan Stack, the founder of Wellbeing Valor and Dedicated Health Initiative Uganda encouraged men who are not ready to have children to go for vasectomy.
“We are trying to encourage men who don’t want to give birth to more children that this is something that gives them a wonderful life and have pleasure with their partners without fear of having a child. If your wife has suffered with many pregnancies and complications, you can take responsibly by doing vasectomy.”
