The Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, has joined millions of Catholics and Christians around the world in mourning the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away shortly after the Easter season.
The Vatican announced his death earlier this week, marking the end of a historic papacy that began in March 2013.
In a heartfelt statement, Speaker Among expressed her deep sorrow and extended prayers on behalf of the Parliament and the people of Uganda.
“I join the Catholic community, Mother Church, and the entire world in praying for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed Holy Father. Eternal peace grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace,” she said.
Among is among the few Ugandans who have had the rare privilege of meeting the Pope on multiple occasions.
During one of the meetings, the Speaker requested the Pope for blessings, revealing at the time that she was expecting a child.
After giving birth to twins, Speaker Among made a return visit to Rome, where she had the honor of presenting the gift of twins to the Holy Father.
Speaker Among also reflected on her personal encounters with the late Pontiff, describing him as a devoted spiritual shepherd who left an indelible mark on the global Church.
“I have had the privilege and honor of meeting Pope Francis on several occasions. He was deeply committed to his faith and to the mission of uniting the Church across the world. His voice was unwavering in advocating for social justice, religious tolerance, and global peace,” she added.
Among’s visits to the Vatican include her participation in official state visits and interfaith forums, most recently in 2023 during a delegation to Rome where she met with Pope Francis to discuss global issues affecting the African continent, including youth empowerment and climate change.
The passing of Pope Francis, notably occurring after Holy Week—when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ—is seen by many as spiritually profound.
“It is a true testament to the divine grace in which his mission and vocation were rooted,” Among noted.
Speaker Among reaffirmed her solidarity with the Catholic faithful.
“The Parliament of Uganda and I stand in prayer with the Church and with all Christian believers around the world during this solemn time.”
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made history as the first Jesuit Pope and the first from the Americas.
His papacy was defined by humility, outreach to the marginalized, and a reformist approach within the Church. He championed causes like climate action, interreligious dialogue, and compassion for migrants and refugees.
As the Catholic Church enters sede vacante, preparations are underway for the funeral and the eventual conclave that will elect a new Pope.
