Joint security forces have recovered four improvised explosive devices from a rented house in Kwata Zone, in Komamboga , in Kawempe division in Kampala.
The IEDs were recovered in the wee hours of Saturday morning in a rented a single roomed house in the area.
The area was on Saturday morning a beehive of activities as security cordoned off the area to safely detonate the explosives.
Led by the chief of the Defence and Intelligence Security formerly known as CMI, Maj Gen James Birungi, the police bomb squad, Special Forces Command, JAAT and the UPDF cordoned off the area.
The explosives were later safely detonated.
According to the defence public information director, Brig Felix Kulayigye, security was alerted by locals after becoming suspicious of strangers who had rented the house but were not sleeping in it.
“ The neighbours had seen these strangers come with luggage to rent the house. They alerted security which swung into action and cordoned off the house,” Brig Kulayigye told journalists.
Inside house was a small mattress and three metallic casings in which were three IEDs while the fourth one was in a bucket.
There was also three feature phones connected to cells and a pistol magazine.
Brig Kulayigye said the suspects behind the explosives were part of an ADF group led by Meddie Nkalubo also known as The Punisher .
He said their accomplices including Augustine Kalanzi, Suleiman Nsubuga and Swalleh Abubaker had earlier been arrested from Masaka , Busia and Zambia respectively.
“Their commander Meddie Nkalubo, aka The Punisher is believed to be located in DRC but also moves to South Africa and other countries. We are tracking him and the accomplices. We are sure he will soon be eliminated or arrested very soon. Security forces will also continue to hunt for remaining terrorist cells still at large in Kampala and other parts of the country,” Brig Kulayigye said.
He called for vigilance by members of the public.
Security recently said ADF members had been sent into the country to cause havoc by detonating bombs.
Ugandan security has since the November 2021 twin blasts at the Central Police Station in Kampala and alongside Parliamentary Avenue that killed over 10 people busted several ADF sleeper cells in the country.
