Security in Kagadi has kicked off investigations into circumstances under which eight family members were massacred by a suspected cult.
According the Albertine Region Police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza, the attack happened on Tuesday night at around 9pm at Mizizi A Village, Kyaterekera Sub County, Kagadi District when unknown assailants attacked residents, resulting in the death of eight.
He named the deceased as Nyirambe Boniface Rogers, Yokononia Isakara,
Kabuwere Norah, Muhindo Praise, Kabugho Anitah, Masika Kabagenyi, Baluku Ferdinandi and Kabugo Olive.
Hakiza said eight others are currently admitted in various clinics.
He said following the incident, a joint team of police officers and the UPDF responded.
“During the operation, two suspects, Baguma Obedi, 33, and Munyirambe David, 36, were also killed while attempting to attack the forces,” Hakiza said.
“We are investigating the incident, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown. We appeal to the public to provide any information regarding this incident.”
The UPDF Mountain Division spokesperson, Maj Bilal Katamba said they suspect the heinous crime was committed by a cult.
“Preliminary information indicates that members of a new cult whose name is yet to be established descended on people, most of whom are their family members and cut them using sharp objects leading to their death and others injured,” Maj Katamba said.
He noted that the UPDF, Police and Internal Security Organisation are on ground hunting for the culprits
“The public will be fully updated on the progress of the hunt and the murder incident as more facts are established.”
