Security has finally opened up on circumstances surrounding the arrest of Maj(Rtd) Ronald Iduli, one of the members of the legal team for former presidential candidate, Dr.Kizza Besigye.
Members of Besigye’s defence team on Tuesday morning reported that Iduli had been abducted from his home in Bulenga, hours to the opposition strongman’s appearance in court.
Lawyer, Eron Kiiza said Iduli had been picked from his home in Bulenga around 4:00 am on Tuesday morning by military personnel, accompanied by police officers.
However, in a statement on Tuesday afternoon, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said Iduli had been arrested after a casde of threatening violence was reported by his landlord, one Lydia Kirabira, 44, a nurse and resident of Kireka-Bbira Village.
“According to the complainant, the suspect identified as Ronald Iduli, 50 , a lawyer had been renting a house from her for three years. However, he had defaulted on rent payments for the past 10 months. Recently, the suspect began appearing in UPDF uniform threatening the landlord prompting her to become suspicious,” Onyango said.
The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson said a joint operation by police and UPDF officers would later arrest Iduli.
According to Onyango, a search at his home led to recovery of several items including a pair of UPDF digital uniforms, a handbook of the law of war of armed forces, a certificate of discharge from UPDF dated 2016 and a pen labelled “People’s Front for Freedom.”
He added that the suspect is currently detained at Bulenga Police Station as inquiries continue.
Iduli in 2018 floored government in a case where he was forcefully retired from active service of the UPDF.
By the time of his retirement, he was serving as a defence lawyer in the General Court Martial.
High Court Judge, Margaret Oumo Oguli awarded him over shs700 million in compensation for lost income following his wrongful retirement that the court ruled was illegal, unconstitutional, and malicious.
