A police officer who lost a suspect’s money in betting has committed suicide, the force has said.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, Constable Sadiq Hussein Baguma attached to Kisoga Police Station in Mukono district was handed shs800,000 and other belongings by a suspect who was being detained for keeping.
was found hanging in his house in Namanve barracks.
“The deceased had earlier on March, 4, 2024 received the money and other belongings for a suspect but didn’t hand over and through relatives, we have learnt that he said the money was stolen from him at a betting house,” Owoyesigyire said.
Statements from relatives indicate that later, Baguma told them the money had been robbed from him at a betting house but according to police, it is suspected he blew the money in betting.
Meanwhile, the police officer started calling relatives asking them to help him raise the funds to avoid reprimand by police.
“He made threats to the relatives that they would not see him again alive if they didn’t help him raise the funds,” Owoyesigyire said.
However, when he failed to raise the funds, it is suspected that Baguma later committed suicide after his decomposing body was found in his house in Namanve police barracks by neighbours.
“In the house, the neighbours found him hanging on a tied bed sheet around his neck on a wooden decker bed.”
Owoyesiyire said investigations into the incident have kicked off to ascertain circumstances leading to the death of the police officer.
