Police in Kampala have arrested a police constable suspected of killing his ex-lover and another individual in Naguru Barracks.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Constable Alex Adei, attached to the Counter Terrorism Unit, shot and killed his former wife after being deployed with a firearm.
Owoyesigyire explained that Adei’s ex-wife had separated from him and had since married another police officer, with whom she was staying in Naguru Barracks. On the day of the incident, the victim had been at her rented house in Ntinda but ran to the barracks after an argument with Adei. He followed her to Naguru and fatally shot her outside her residence.
Neighbours reported hearing the gunfire, but by the time they arrived at the scene, Adei had fled. Initially, it was believed only one person had been killed. However, on Monday morning, a second body, that of a fellow police officer, was discovered in a pool of blood near where the first victim was shot. Authorities believe a stray bullet may have killed the officer while he was asleep.
Owoyesigyire noted that while details remain limited, investigations are underway. There are allegations that Adei had a history of misusing his firearm, which will be examined as part of the inquiry into how he was redeployed and armed.
The suspect is currently detained at Jinja Road Police station as investigations continue.
