Police have banned private security guards from moving with guns in Kampala Metropolitan Areas with immediate effect until the end of the month.
In a January 14 notice to all managers of private security organisations by the police director for operations, AIGP John Nuwagira, no security guard will be allowed to move with their firearm for the duration of the duration of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits.
“You may explore the possibility of keeping guns at areas of deployment where the guards on rotation hand over to the incoming or a collective transportation by purposed vehicles under escort of police,” AIGP Nuwagira said.
He said that private security guards stationed at hotels within Kampala Metropolitan Area, especially those hosting summit guest as well as shopping malls must strictly follow the standard operating procedures.
“Be extra alert, cooperate with and abide by the guidance and lawful orders given by the security agencies in their respective areas of operation.”
The directive comes as the country gears to host the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Group of 77 (G77) + China Summits that kick off today until January 23 at Speke Resort , Munyonyo.
The two summits will host over 1500 dignitaries who will be in the country for a week.
Police have put much emphasis on private security guards considering that many of them are reckless and there have been reported cases of shooting by these guards.
