The National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, has strongly criticized corruption within Uganda’s Parliament, labeling it the “High Temple of Corruption.”
“There is no better place to speak about corruption in Uganda than here, in Parliament. This institution has distinguished itself as the very epicenter of corruption,” Kyagulanyi declared.
Kyagulanyi made these remarks during the presentation of the 2025/26 Alternative Budget, an event aimed at showcasing the opposition’s vision for national resource allocation.
Addressing members of the alternative government at Parliament, Bobi Wine accused the country’s leadership of betraying citizens by engaging in fraudulent activities that deprive Uganda’s most vulnerable populations of critical resources.
“This Parliament has had the most outrageous scandals recently, with impunity siphoning taxpayers’ money. In recent days, we have seen this Parliament doing unprecedented things,” he said.
Bobi Wine condemned Speaker Anita Among and several cabinet ministers for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation of iron sheets intended for impoverished communities in Karamoja.
“We’ve seen in this Parliament the Speaker of Parliament and government ministers sharing iron sheets meant for the poorest of the poor in Uganda. It is in this Parliament that we’ve seen the Leader of Opposition rewarded before he works,” he remarked.
Kyagulanyi further argued that corruption has become ingrained in Uganda’s political system, serving as a tool for rewarding those who participate in it while silencing those who attempt to expose it.
“We know that one of the biggest achievements of the Museveni regime is institutionalizing corruption. And that is true because we all can realize that corruption is a currency in this regime. Corruption is used to reward the corrupt and to silence or even eliminate those that are fighting it,” he said.
He also expressed concern that Uganda’s Parliament has become a place that attracts unethical individuals while corrupting even those with good intentions. However, he remained hopeful that his leadership would not fall into the same pattern of compromise.
“It is a sure way of General Museveni to hold on to power. And now we are at this Parliament, I can even dare say that this, our Parliament, just like the Museveni regime, it attracts the worst of characters and corrupts the best. It is my hope and prayer that our leadership here will not be compromised like it was a while ago,” Kyagulanyi stated.
