Police in Kampala have arrested five people including Kampala deputy Lord Mayor, Doreen Nyanjura and Ingrid Turinawe who were demonstrating against the continued detention of opposition strongman Dr.Kizza Besigye.
Others arrested included Fiona Kabayiza, Faridah Nongozi and Shadia Namubiru.
The five were part of a demonstration calling for the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners. They were marching from Mini Price towards Arua Park when police intercepted them at William Street,” Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said.
He noted that others in the group fled the scene upon seeing the police
“. The suspects are currently being held at CPS Kampala, charged with inciting violence, and their statements have been recorded pending their court appearance.”
The development comes on the backdrop of the growing discontent among members of the public over the continued detention of ailing Dr.Besigye at Luzira.
The Supreme Court last month ordered the transfer of all files involving civilians currently being handled by the General Court Martial to ordinary courts with competent jurisdiction.
However, the file for Dr.Besigye is yet to be transferred to the civilians courts.
Recently, it was announced that the four-time presidential candidate had started a hunger strike and during his appearance at Buganda Road Court, he looked frail.
On Sunday, Besigye was rushed to a private clinic in Bugolobi under unknown circumstances.
