Opposition National Unity Platform has chosen renowned city lawyer, Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola for the forthcoming Kawempe North MP by-election.
NUP on Tuesday announced that the former national legal advisor for the Democratic Party (DP) had beaten nine others to the flag.
The National Unity Platform recently outlined the process it would use to come with the party flag bearer for Kawempe North
According to the party, the debate performance was to constitute 25% considering articulation, understanding of parliamentary roles and policy positions while 25% of the marks would come from assessment of candidates by a vetting committee.
Meanwhile, 50% would be contributed by constituency consultations where a team was deployed to gather feedback from voters in Kawempe North on each candidate’s suitability for the position.
NUP’s chairperson of the party’s election committee, Mercy Walukamba said Nalukoola emerged winner with 71.4% defeating Umar Magala, his closet challenger.
Nalukoola will now battle it out with NRM’s Faridah Nambi, Sadat Mukiibi also known as Kalifa Aganaga from FDC, Ismail Musiitwa(PPP), Hanifa Karadi(independent), Muhamood Mutazindwa(independent) and Twahira Akabinda Ssegirinya, the deceased’s widow who comes on the independent ticket.
The Kawempe North by-election is scheduled for March 13, following the death of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya on January 9 at Lubaga Hospital after being sick for a while.
