A decade after the passing of Supreme Mufti Sheikh Zubair Kayongo, his legacy continues to inspire action most recently in the form of a Shs300 million commitment from President Yoweri Museveni.
The funds are earmarked for the construction and renovation of a school and mosque in Buswabulongo, Lwamata Town Council, Kiboga District, where the revered religious leader was commemorated in a memorial event.
Attended by hundreds, the gathering marked the 10th Dua (prayer) in honor of Mufti Kayongo, a man celebrated across Uganda for championing peace, education, and religious unity.
His influence transcended sectarian lines, leaving an indelible mark on Uganda’s Muslim community and beyond.
Representing the President at the event, aspiring Kiboga Woman MP Desire Muhooza announced the funding, describing it as a reflection of Museveni’s appreciation for the late Mufti’s contributions.
“President Museveni understands the significance of Mufti Zubair Kayongo’s work,” Muhooza told the gathering. “This school and mosque will stand as a testament to his dedication and the values he instilled in our community.”
The dual-purpose project aims to fill key community gaps: access to quality education and a permanent place of worship. For residents of Buswabulongo, it symbolizes both progress and remembrance—a convergence of the spiritual and the practical, much like Mufti Kayongo’s own philosophy.
At the heart of the memorial event was a call to preserve the unity and development that Kayongo stood for. Supreme Mufti Sheikh Shabban Mohammad Galabuzi, who led the prayers, echoed that sentiment in his address.
“Sheikh Kayongo was a man of peace and unity,” Galabuzi said. “This project will help keep his vision alive for future generations.”
International recognition of the occasion came from the Iranian Ambassador to Uganda, Shaikh Majid Safar, who joined the congregation and spoke about broader partnerships.
“We remain committed to supporting Uganda’s development, particularly in sectors like agriculture, which directly impact communities,” Safar stated.
Supreme Mufti Sheikh Zubairi Kayongo passed away in Dar es Salaam on April 16, 2015.
