President Yoweri Museveni has appointed former Defence Minister Dr. Crispus Kiyonga as the new Chancellor of Makerere University.
Vice Chancellor, Prof.Barnabas Nawangwe confirmed the development.
“On behalf of Makerere University Council, I extend our warm congratulations to Dr. Kiyonga on this prestigious appointment and warmly welcome him to the service of Makerere University,” Prof. Nawangwe said.
Born in Kasese district in 1952, Kiyonga attended Bwera primary school, Nyaksura schoo for his O-level and Kings College Buddo for his A-level.
He later attended Makerere University School of Medicine where he obtained his first medical degree , a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1978.
In 2004, Kiyonga obtained a Master of Health Science with specialization in population dynamics from the Johns Hopkin School of Public Health.
He previously served as minister for finance between 1986 and 1992, minister for internal affairs between 1994 and 1996, minister for health between 1996 and 2001, national political commissar between 2001 and 2006 and later minister of defence.
After being dropped as minister for Defence, Kiyonga was appointed Uganda’s Ambassador to China.
