The Uganda Registration Services Bureau(URSB) has said the number of Ugandans who opt for civil marriage has gone up.
“In the past one year, we have seen an increase in civil marriages by 40%. Every day, we see 17 civil marriages registered,” Registrar General and Executive Director of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, Mercy Kainobwisho said.
She said that more Ugandans have now accepted civil marriage as one of the five categories of marriage in Uganda.
“Many people now appreciate how marriage relates to family stability and stability of society. Formalising marriage is key to enjoy stable families.”
According to officials from URSB, civil marriage has become an easier option for Ugandans who prefer simpler and quicker weddings as well as those who lack the financial muscle to organise extravagant ceremonies.
For example, a civil marriage costs shs200,000 at URSB and the cost goes to less than shs300,000 if you add on the eligibility documents to prove one is of age to get married and affidavits.
For foreigners, it costs one with valid documentation $200 to get married at URSB.
