A couple of media houses have announced the withdraw of their journalists from covering the ongoing election in Kawempe North following attacks by security personnel.
Several journalists from NBS TV, Daily Monitor, NTV, Spark TV and others were on Thursday either beaten, cameras confiscated or arrested by security while covering the ongoing polls.
In sperate statements, Nation Media Group announced it had withdrawn all its journalists from the field.
“We have taken the difficult decision to temporarily withdraw our Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda journalists from covering the Kawempe North by-election for their safety because they are being targeted and attacked by armed soldiers and undercover security operatives,” the General Manager in Uganda in charge of editorial at Nation Media Group said.
Buganda owned BBS Terefayina followed suit, announcing it had recalled all its staff from the field after attacks on journalists.
“The management of BBS Terefayina has decided to recall its reporters who have been covering the Kawempe North by-election because of attacks by security personnel including Police and UPDF soldiers,” BBS said.
Bukoto-based Radio Simba has also followed suit.
A number of people have raised concern over the several cases of attacks on journalists in the ongoing by-election in Kawempe North.
