The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director Dr. Chris Mukiza who also doubles as the Census Commissioner has said the household mapping exercise is almost complete, ahead of the August enumeration exercise as part of this year’s housing and population census.
Mukiza, who was meeting CAO’s and town clerks during their quarterly performance review meeting at Hotel Africana in Kampala said UBOS has been conducting household listing and mapping throughout the country and that the exercise currently stands at 94% with 67005 Villages completed with only 4227(5.9%) not yet listed.
He noted that UBOS is soon starting the same exercise in Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso districts.
Mukiza applauded CAOs and town clerks who have supported the exercise but also urged those whose areas have not yet been mapped to 100% to ensure that the exercise is undertaken to completion.
He said that the Bureau is going to work with the district officials to recruit field personnel for the field enumeration exercise and over 120,000 people are to be recruited.
“There are appropriate procedures and guidelines for recruiting and selecting the enumerators and, therefore, I urge all the leaders to ensure that qualified citizens are recruited to participate this exercise,” he emphasised.
He said that adverts will be run in the newspapers by UBOS but the recruitment will be handled at the districts and city levels with support of the UBOS team.
Dr.Mukiza called upon CAOs and town clerks to support the forthcoming population and housing census in all ways possible.
“As the government body, we are responsible for coordinating, monitoring and supervising the national statistical system and we continue to support government’s results-based agenda by providing statistics needed for planning and policy formulation. The statistical data and information further supports monitoring performance and development progress of international and national development frameworks.”
The forthcoming census will be conducted for 10 days starting May, 10, 2024 and will be the first digital census in Uganda.
