The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has revealed that during the Kabaka’s Birthday Prayer at Rubaga Cathedral on April 13, the event organizers intentionally arranged for National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as Bobi Wine, to sit together with the former leader of opposition and Nyendo Mukungwe MP, Mathias Mpuuga, despite the two not being on good terms.
While appearing on Sanyuka TV this morning, Katikkiro Mayiga stated that the intention was to provide an opportunity for the two leaders to reconcile.
“During the Kabaka’s birthday prayers, we intentionally arranged for Kyagulanyi Ssentamu and Mathias Mpuuga to sit together,” he said.
The Katikkiro added that when he saw the two speaking to each other, he encouraged them to maintain their dialogue.
“They chatted during the mass. I later asked them, ‘Why can’t you always communicate like you did in church?'” he remarked.
The sight of Bobi Wine and Mpuuga conversing during the Kabaka Birthday Prayer became the day’s highlight, with the images and video of their interaction going viral on social media.
Mpuuga and NUP had fallen out after Mpuuga received a service award worth UGX 500 million as a commissioner of parliament.
NUP criticized the award, calling it morally wrong, and requested that Mpuuga step down from his position as the Deputy NUP president for Buganda region and apologize.
Mpuuga refused to comply, leading to tension between him and the party. Since then, he has been a subject of ridicule on social media and has been absent from most NUP functions.
