Police in Kampala have arrested a maid together with her husband to kidnap her boss’ three-year-old baby and demanding a shs20 million ransom.
According to Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Mary Kansiime,21, a maid employed at the home of Jean-Claude Byakagaba and his wife Jane Kasemire in Makindye Luwafu zone in Kampala.
On returning home after work on Saturday, the family could not trace the whereabouts of the 21 year old maid who had been employed for 10 months and their baby.
“At approximately 9:00 PM, Byakagaba received a phone call from an unknown individual using the maid’s phone. The caller claimed to have both the child and the maid in Sudan and demanded a ransom shs 20 million. Upon receiving the report at 10:29 PM, police swiftly registered the case and initiated an investigation,” Owoyesigyire said.
Police later tracked the phone leading to the arrest of the maid and her husband, Policarpe Bulambo from Nakinyuguzi Zone, Luwafu parish .
“It was found out that Bulambo has been using the maid’s phone to demand the ransom from the complainant. They were arrested and found with the baby.”
He said the baby has since been recovered and returned to her parents.
Owoyesigyire said investigations are still ongoing as the suspects who are currently at Katwe Police Station await being arraigned in courts of law.
Police reminded the public to exercise caution and perform a thorough background check when hiring domestic workers.
“We also urge the public to promptly report similar incidents to the police for swift action and investigations.”
