Liberty Insurance Uganda, in partnership with the Moms Gather initiative, has donated essential items to the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Uganda (SHAU) to support children affected by these conditions.
The donation, which primarily included sanitary materials, was handed over by Joseph Almeida, Managing Director of Liberty Life Assurance Uganda Juliet Murungi Okwi, Head of Marketing and Customer Experience to Ruth Nalugya, Executive Director of SHAU, at the association’s offices in Lubaga.
Juliet Okwi emphasized that the donation is part of Liberty Insurance’s corporate social responsibility efforts, which go beyond financial profits to address community welfare. “Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus are often overlooked, and we felt it was important to raise awareness and show support for children facing these challenges,” Okwi said. The company also aims to break the stigma surrounding these conditions through education and awareness campaigns.
Moms Gather, a community initiative focused on empowering and supporting mothers, has also been active in raising awareness and resources to support families with children suffering from Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.
Lisa Kusiima, founder of Moms Gather, expressed that their collaboration with Liberty Insurance aimed to provide a safe and supportive environment for mothers, encouraging community solidarity.
“We have been collecting essential items and funds for a year, and today, we are proud to deliver this support to the families in need,” Kusiima added.
Ruth Nalugya, Executive Director of SHAU, highlighted the pressing need for more support as the prevalence of these conditions in Uganda remains high. With 6,000 to 8,000 new cases annually, the association can only assist a fraction of affected families.
“The burden of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Uganda is immense, and immediate surgery is required for children born with these conditions to avoid severe long-term health consequences,” Nalugya explained.
Nalugya commended Liberty Insurance and Moms Gather for their generous contribution and called on other well-wishers to extend their support to improve the lives of affected children. She emphasized that while the needs of these children are diverse and urgent, support from community-based initiatives like Liberty Insurance and Moms Gather helps to bridge the gap.
