The Kampala-Mukono passenger train service resumes on April 14, 2025, following successful repairs.
The service, which had become a popular transport option since its relaunch in June 2024, was briefly suspended on April 6 to facilitate essential repairs.
The move had temporarily disrupted daily routines for thousands who rely on the train for affordable and efficient travel.
In a statement issued on Saturday, URC announced the completion of restoration works, assuring the public of safety along the route.
“Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is pleased to inform the general public and all our esteemed passengers that the works on the embankment at Namanve have been concluded and the railway line between Mukono and Kampala is now safe for train operations,” the statement read in part.
The Corporation further noted that extensive technical evaluations had been conducted to ensure readiness for operations.
“Following successful restoration works and comprehensive safety assessments by our technical teams, commuter and passenger train services will resume on 14th April 2025 as previously communicated,” it adds.
Since its relaunch, the Kampala-Mukono train service has proven transformative, offering a reliable, low-cost alternative to road travel.
Trains often depart Mukono full and remain packed through to Namanve, reflecting the growing demand for the service.
Catering to both low- and high-income earners, the commuter trains have been praised for easing traffic congestion and reducing daily transportation expenses especially for those traveling to and from the city for work or school.
With services set to resume, many passengers are looking forward to reclaiming the convenience and savings the trains offer.
