Local musician Joseph Mayanja, popularly known as Jose Chameleone, has said notified journalist and social media personality Jane Namukasa that he is going to take legal action against her over alleged defamation.
Chameleone, through his legal representatives Mwema and Company Advocates Solicitors, is demanding an apology and a compensation of shs100 million within five days.
According to the intention to sue, Namukasa is accused of making statements on social media alleging that Chameleone had been arrested in the United States for assaulting his host, Juliet Zawedde.
The Bayuda singer refutes these claims, stating that he is currently in a Chicago hospital receiving treatment for a pancreas-related condition and awaiting surgery.
“Our client takes great exception to your false statements and demands that you immediately cease and desist from making any further such unsavoury commentary against him,” the intention to sue reads in part.
“Our client further demands that you immediately retract the defamatory statements, issue an apology to him through the same platforms where the statements were made, and also compensate him to a tune of shs100 million within five days.”
Despite Chameleone’s clarification, Namukasa has remained defiant, insisting that her sources confirm the singer is in prison rather than a hospital.
“I still stand on what I said. Dr. Jose is in prison instead of the hospital you are claiming. Prove me wrong with a live video instead of posting old ones,” Namukasa said.
Following days of online speculation and backlash, Chameleone’s legal team officially served Namukasa with a legal notice demanding retraction and compensation for the alleged falsehoods spread against their client.
