Police in Ibanda, in Western Uganda have kicked off investigations into circumstances under which one of their own was killed by as mob during a burial.
Constable Suleiman Chemonges, 28, attached to Bishebe Police Station was killed while on duty as he guarded a funeral of one Lazarus Kahangire who had earlier died in Nyabuhikye government prison.
The tragic incident unfolded when the funeral gathering turned violent, leading to the fatal attack on the officer whom the mob accused of being part of the people who led to Kahangire’s death.
According to Simon Kasasira, the Rwizi Regional Police Spokesperson, law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene and managed to recover an SMG rifle along with 16 rounds of ammunition.
However, PC Chemonges had already succumbed to his injuries.
His body was transported to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary as investigations into the horrific act commenced.
The Uganda Police Force has vowed to bring all those responsible to justice, emphasizing that mob violence is not only unlawful but a serious threat to public order and security.
“We want to assure the public that all suspects involved in this criminal act shall be arrested and brought to book,” Kasasira said.
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from acts of mob justice and instead report any grievances through lawful channels.
Meanwhile, police are working closely with local leaders and eyewitnesses to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack
