Police in Kampala have started investigating circumstances under which employees of Lugogo based China Town stores robbed the supermarket of items worth shs50 million.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire said this robbery was uncovered following the arrest of one of one person with forged receipts and supermarket items.
“On December, 28 at around 8pm, Muhammad Nyanzi was found with items and forged receipts from China Town Supermarket, a matter which registered at Kyadondo police station,” Owoyesigyire said.
He said upon interrogation, Nyanzi told police that he had been sent to the supermarket with receipts by one Ali Kagingo who is his cousin brother and a team was sent to the different locations where the items were recovered.
Police said items worth shs50 million including bed covers, trays, woofers, four pieces of sofa sets, Hisense fridges, washing machines, Samsung TV 75 inches, Hisense TV 85 inches, Hisense TV 65 inches, microwave oven, a Hisense gas cooker and other items all got from China Town Supermarket.
How the robbery was done
According to police, the racket which includes mostly employees of the supermarket forged receipts that they would give to different people whom they would ask to go to the supermarket and claim for the items by showing the forged tickets and indicating they bought them.
The gullible staff would give out the items.
The Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson said they have arrested Dickens Nuwamanya, Bruce David Muzahura and Brian Mpanga while the masterminds, Rehema Kagingo and Ali Kagingo are still on the run but the hunt for them is on.
“Investigations are ongoing but we ask the supermarket to heighten measures to curb such crimes and secure their merchandise.”
China Town announced its entry into Uganda by offering cheaper products.
This saw hundreds of customers throng the Lugogo-based store to purchase these relatively cheaper products.
