Police have shot dead an unidentified man who kidnapped four children and demanded a shs5 million ransom before releasing them.
The man without any identification documents on Monday morning in a daring act, stormed the residence of Anita Ayebare, a resident of Bongole Zone in Makindye Ssabagabo in Wakiso district and kidnapped her four children at around 10:30am as they had breakfast.
“It is reported that an unidentified assailant, armed with a panga, forcibly entered the residence of Ms. Ayebare Anita, 25 years old, a resident of Bongole Zone, while she was having breakfast with her children. The assailant, threatening violence, demanded a sum of shs5 million in cash from Ms. Ayebare Anita,” Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson said.
“When she resisted, the perpetrator turned his aggression towards her four children, Atuhaire Lucia, Ampaire Maria Zoe, Musiime Blair , and Ankunda Godius .
Meanwhile, Ayebare was able to escape and made an alarm that attracted neigbours and police but by the time they came, they found the suspect had closed the house together with the children.
Police later broke into the house and fired bullets to subdue the suspect.
“Thanks to the swift response of both local residents and the police stationed at Mirimu, the assailant was subdued. It was later realized that he had inflicted injuries on the children. The children were immediately rushed to Nalujja Medical Center, Batata Entebbe road, for urgent medical attention. However, their condition remains critical,” Owoyesigyire said.
He added that the body of the suspect was conveyed to the city mortuary Mulago for postmortem, as investigations continue with the aim of ascertaining his identity and motive.
