Police have arrested a man found with a firearm and other suspicious items concealed in a sack at Kisenyi Bus Terminal in Kampala.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire identified the suspect as David Tumwine, 40, a resident of Mubuteraniro village in Mubende District.
Tumwine was intercepted during routine security checks at the terminal on Wednesday morning. According to Owoyesigyire, the suspect attempted to flee when asked to allow a search of the sack he was carrying.
“During routine security checks, Tumwine, who was carrying two bags, was asked to stop for inspection at Kisenyi bus terminal. However, he attempted to flee, abandoning his belongings,” Owoyesigyire said.
The terminal’s security team pursued and apprehended him before handing him over to the police.
Upon inspection, authorities discovered a sub-machine gun (SMG), 24 rounds of live ammunition, two magazines, three pangas, a litre of petrol, and ropes in his possession.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Tumwine was travelling from Kyotera District, with Busia District as his destination.
“We are currently working to establish the source of the firearm and the suspect’s intentions,” Owoyesigyire added.
The police commended the vigilance of the security personnel at Kisenyi Bus Terminal for thwarting what could have been a potential criminal act.
“This incident underscores the importance of maintaining robust security measures to ensure public safety,” Owoyesigyire noted.
The suspect is currently detained at Old Kampala Police Station as investigations continue.
