Police investigations have detailed how former prosecutor, Joan Kagezi was killed by unknown assailants in 2015 as she returned home in Kiwatule, a Kampala suburb.
Kagezi was gunned down in her vehicle before her children as she stopped to buy fruits on the roadside.
At the time of her killing, Kagezi was prosecuting suspects involved in the infamous 2010 twin bombing case at the High Court of Kampala.
After eight years, in November last year, four men were arraigned in court over the murder and are currently on remand at Luzira.
According to police investigations contained in the latest annual crime report, mid- March in 2015, John Kibuuka, Daniel Kisekka, Masajjage John and Nasur Mugomole met briefly at Mambule stage -Kisalosalo and proceeded to Kibuuka’s home in Kyebando.
They would later hold a planning meeting in Kibuuka’s house and confirmed availability of two buttless SMG rifles and in the same meeting, Kibuuka told the group that Kagezi was the target “because he was handling cases involving Muslims” the police report says.
The investigations indicate that Kibuuka told the rest of the group members that the mission offer was $200,000( approximately shs776million) but a deposit of shs2 million was readily available.
On the same day, using Mugomole’s motorcycle, the two guns were taken to his home in Kanyanya for cleaning and safe custody.
The mission
According to the investigations , on the fateful day the four met at Kibuuka’s home for the final briefing and agreed to set off for the mission at 5pm and when they time reached, they converged under a mango tree in Kyebando-Kisalosalo where they distributed the guns and shared the shs2 million deposit with each taking shs500,000.
They would later set off for Kiwatule on two motorcycles and with two guns.
The four moved from Kyebando to Kiwatule via Ntinda with Masajjage carrying Kibuuka on the motorbike whereas Mugomole carried Kisekka and would later at around 5:30pm, arrived at Kiwatule and waited at a nearby supermarket.
The shooting
Investigations indicate that at around 7pm, Kagezi’s official vehicle arrived as she stopped at a fruit stall near the supermarket.
Immediately, Kibuuka moved in and distracted her from opening the car door before he shot her instantly.
He would later peep in the vehicle to confirm she was dead.
Meanwhile, Kisekka fired shots in the air to scare off the gathering crowd as the group left the scene via Najjera back to Kampala.
Kisekka and Mugomole returned to Kanyanya, kept the gun and changed clothes while Masajjage and Kibuka disappeared until the following day.
Meanwhile, three days later, Kibuuka, Kisekka and Mugomole went to a shrine in Kayunga for cleansing.
The charges
In November last year, the four suspects including Kibuuka John, Masajjage John, Kisekka Dan and Nasur Abdalla were arraigned before the Chief Magistrates Court in Nakawa and charged with terrorism and murder.
The state alleges that the quartet on March, 30, 2015 at Kiwatule, Nakawa division in Kampala with an aim of influencing government or intimidating the public or a section of the public and for political, religious , social or economic aim, indiscriminately without due regard to the safety of others or property , directly involved themselves or were complicit in the attack and murder of assistant director of Public Prosecutions Joan Kagezi.
They are accused of murder contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act for shooting dead Kagezi with malice aforethought in 2015.
They have since been remanded.
Three of the four had earlier been arrested and remanded over other charges including aggravated robbery but investigations last year linked them to the gruesome murder of prosecutor Joan Kagezi leading to the fresh charges.
