Two security guards attached to GKO Security Limited were behind a foiled attempted robbery at Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) in Koona East Village, Wakiso Town Council, early Sunday morning.
The guards, who had been deployed for night duty at the bank, allegedly turned their guns against their employer at around 1:00 a.m.
According to police, the duo later identified as Emmanuel Okao, 27, and Okelo Justin attempted to steal from the very premises they were hired to protect.
“Our officers responded swiftly to an alert and found the suspects had hidden themselves in the bank’s ceiling,” said a spokesperson from Wakiso Police. “Despite warnings to surrender, the guards cocked their rifles, forcing our officers to fire toward their hiding spot.”
Emmanuel Okao was fatally shot during the confrontation, while Okelo Justin surrendered and was arrested on the spot.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the two security guards had allegedly plotted the robbery after reportedly going without pay for more than three months.
“We currently have one suspect in custody at Wakiso Police Station, and investigations are ongoing,” police confirmed.
In a statement, DTB Uganda commended the swift actions of the security forces and the activation of emergency protocols that helped avert the robbery.
“One suspect is currently in police custody, while another, regrettably, lost his life during the operation. We are working closely with the Uganda Police and other agencies to ensure a full and transparent investigation,” DTB Uganda said.
The bank also reassured its customers, staff, and partners that no property was lost during the incident and that operations remain secure.
