Wiliam Street in Kampala was on Friday afternoon thrown into pandemonium after a man carrying shs28 million in an envelope watched as it developed cracks and money splashed all over the street.
The incident happened at around 5pm on Friday, February, 9, 2024 when Seruli Dennis was carrying an envelope containing shs28 million from the bank.
“The envelope in which he was carrying the money gave way and the money landed on the street. Everybody was picking what they could afford and running away with it,” police spokesperson, Fred Enanga told journalists on Monday.
According to Enanga, by the time police intervened, only shs890,000 out of the shs28 million was recovered whereas two suspects were arrested.
“Shs28 million is a lot of money and getting a police officer from CPS to escort you with you money costs you less than shs20,000 but people take these things for granted. This incident should serve as a lesson to people who are transporting money that the public is really hungry for this money and will not pick the money and return it to you but will rather grab it.”
“The good thing is that the footage of the people who robbed this money from Seruli was captured and police continues to hunt for them.”
Enanga also reminded members of the public, especially businessmen to avoid moving unescorted, noting that for one reason or another, robbers will be alerted of anyone carrying huge sums of money.
“There are always leakages in all these incidents where the money is stolen. The leakages are with banks where you withdraw money, from the businesses themselves or from families and friends who get to know.”
