Frank Gashumba has formally apologised to the Buganda Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, for his past social media remarks ridiculing the Buganda Prime Minister. Gashumba, who had previously criticized Mayiga on various issues, met with him at Bulange in Mengo on Monday to offer a personal apology.
During the meeting, Gashumba expressed his regret, referencing his family’s history in Buganda.
“My great-grandparents were warmly welcomed in Buganda, unlike other areas that confined Banyarwanda to camps. Buganda gave them a place to call home. I therefore apologise for my wrongs,” he stated. He also praised Mayiga’s efforts in developing Buganda through numerous initiatives.
In response, Katikkiro Mayiga commended Gashumba for acknowledging his mistakes and choosing to mend relations.
“I see Gashumba as a Muganda despite him calling himself a Mvandimwe. He has grown up here in Kalungu (Buganda). It is good that he has come to correct the mistakes he had made, and I am happy for him,” Mayiga said.
He added that apologising is a sign of virtue and warned against the misuse of social media, urging Ugandans to use the platform for constructive discussions.
This development follows a recent apology from the family of the late presidential press secretary, Tamale Mirundi, who had also previously launched verbal attacks against the Buganda Kingdom.
Mirundi’s family met with Katikkiro Mayiga to offer their apology, which came a month after his passing.
