Police and other security agencies have kicked off a manhunt for three inmates who escaped from Mityana government prison.
According to the Wamala regional police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, the three escaped at around 4pm last week when they jumped over the prison fence.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the inmates were being escorted to their wards after meals, when four individuals jumped over the fence. While one was successfully re-arrested, the remaining three managed to escape,”Kawala said.
She named the escapees as Francis Mfitumukiza, 24 who hails from Rubange village, Murora subcounty, Kisoro district and is facing charges of murder and aggravated robbery, Gideon Nasasir, 37 who hails from Muko village, Muko subcounty, Rubanda district and is facing charges of aggravated robbery.
The third suspect is Joseph Hakiza, 27from Nyarubuye village, Katobo Parish, Nyarubuye subcounty, Kisoro district, facing charges of aggravated defilement.
“A case of escape from lawful custody has been registered under Mityana CRB 1197, with ongoing search efforts. We urge anyone with information about the suspects to contact the police at 0800300118/0706034158/0757719965 or report to the nearest police station.”
