The NRM flag bearer in the just conclude Kawempe North by-election, Faridah Nambi has run to court to challenge the election of lawyer Elias Nalukoola.
Nalukoola, who was standing on the NUP ticket beat Nambi who came second in the hotly contested by-election last month.
In her petition before the civil division of the High Court in Kampala, Nambi said the Electoral Commission failed to count results from 14 polling stations, comprising over 16,600 registered voters, yet still declared Nalukoola as the winner with 17,939 votes.
She says by not counting these votes, thousands of her voters were disenfranchised and this had a bearing on the outcome of the election.
“There was non-compliance with the Parliamentary Elections Act, which affected the result in a substantial manner; and that the winner and his agents committed multiple electoral offences,” Nambi’s lawyers said.
Nambi says that Nalukoola’s team involved in committing electoral offences, including campaigning on polling day, obstructing election officials and voters, and bribery both before and during the election.
The development comes weeks after Nalukoola was gazetted and consequently sworn in as the new MP for Kawempe North.
