At least 45 people lost their lives in accidents on Ugandan roads during Easter holidays, traffic police has said.
According to Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, the accidents happened between Holy Thursday and Easter Monday.
“During this period, a total 45 people lost their lives and 125 sustained injuries due to road crashes,” Kananura said.
He said among the dead were 22 motorcyclists accounting for 49% of the total deaths , five passengers on these motorcycles constituting 11% and 10 pedestrians constituting 22%, adding that in total, these three categories accounted for 72% of the deaths registered during Easter holidays on Ugandan roads.
Police also said that most of the crashes happened in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area, Albertine and Wamala police regions.
These figures show that at least nine people died on Ugandan roads every day during the five days of Easter festivities.
The number of 45 people killed during these festivities is also higher than the 37 who died during the same period last year.
