President Yoweri Museveni has reappointed Dr.Johnson Byabashaija as the Commissioner General of Prisons for another two year term, starting May, 4.
“I Yoweri Kaguta Museveni do hereby renew the appointment of Dr. Byabashaija as Commissioner General of Prisons for a period of 24 months on local contract terms with effect from May 2, 2024,” Museveni said.
Having joined Uganda Prisons Services in 1983, Dr. Byabashaija became the Commissioner General in 2005.
President Museveni in 2023 said Byabashaija had transformed prisons into an institution without any scandals.
“I am very happy with the good work you are doing. I don’t hear many scandals in the prisons.I have not heard many cases,” Museveni said.
Dr.Byabashaja said in 2020 that he wants to oversee a transition in the prisons.
“I want to oversee a transition from my generation to the next generation. I have been here for quite some time and if you depart badly, you can cause some instability in the institution.”
He also spoke of full professionalizing Uganda Prisons Services.
