The Commissioner General of Prisons, Dr.Johnson Byabashaija has issued directives to prisons officers on social media misuse.
According to the prison’s spokesperson, Frank Baine, the commissioner general has asked prison officers to desist from posting unprofessional photos and videos while on duty.
“Any culprits to this act will be subjected to prisons disciplinary procedures as stipulated in the prisons standing orders part 1, 2017,” Baine said.
Of late, a number of officers from security agencies including prisons have been taken by the social media wave, of especially TikTok where they post videos while in uniform that according to the prisons spokesperson are inappropriate.
He said all concerned officers are directed to ensure strict compliance with these guidelines and provide guidance to the staff under their command accordingly.
In another related development, the Commissioner General of Prisons has issued a class one standby order in which prisons officers have been directed not to leave prisons for the festive season.
The order starts on December, 15, 2023 to January, 1, 2024 and during this period, prisons must strengthen and enhance prison security, intelligence and coordination with other security agencies as you remain vigilant and alert.
“Conduct routine patrols around the prison and within the barracks. Hired Prisoners labor (kibarua) is suspended. Staff leave is hereby suspended and exceptional cases shall be handled by the regional commanders.”
According to the order, prisons are asked to adopt a two shift staff deployment to increase numbers and presence whereas prisoners visitations are suspended but items can be delivered at the prison gate.
“Officers in charge must be present in their units at all times and attend to prisoners and staff complaints as and when they arise. Staff end of year parties are suspended.”
