The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong has said corruption in the country has reached intolerable levels.
Giving his end of year address, Todwong said whereas a number of measures have been put in place to fight the vice, it seems not to be nearing its end.
“We have cried out and everyone is shouting but corruption is only increasing. It is like you go to a clinic , they diagnose you, prescribe tablets but the sickness doesn’t go. We need to examine why inspite of all the agencies we have in place, corruption is increasing in this country,” Todwong said.
“We have the IGG, State House Anti-Corruption Unit, State House Health Monitoring Unit, Anti Corruption Court, DPP, Parliamentary accountability committees, CID, whistleblowers and many others the animal called corruption has failed to go.”
He said this state of affairs is a matter of concern for the ruling party , noting that the high levels of corruption are denting the credibility of the NRM government.
Todwong said NRM has zero tolerance to corruption under which it set up a very robust institutional framework deliberately put in place to make the fight against corruption easier.
He urged NRM leadership at all levels from the grassroots to the highest echelons to actively participate in the fight against the “cancer of corruption.
The NRM Secretary General also condemned the widespread cases of land evictions all over the country that he said are also denting the image of the ruling party and its government.
“As the NRM Secretariate, we call on government to decentralize further, institutions that help in resolving land related conflicts and ease access to justice for persons affected by land conflict. Additionally, government and the party will emphasize through barazas at the lower levels to educate the population about their rights in regard to the land they own.”
