The deputy speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa has survived death after a chopper he was flying in crash landed in Western Uganda.
Tayebwa was on Saturday night flying back to Kampala after attending a Kuhingira for Edith Ainomugisha and Albert Bagabe.
Ainomugisha is the daughter of National Water Managing Director, Dr. Eng. Silver Mugisha and Annet Katusiime Mugisha, the Woman MP for Bushenyi.
Tayebwa confirmed the accident on his social media platforms.
“Dear all, my colleagues and I are all okay. No one is hurt,” Tayebwa said.
The crash
According to the Nile Post, the crash happened after Tayebwa attended the giveaway function which ended late.
On rushing to Nyakisharara airfield in Mbarara, his team was asked to sleep in Mbarara and fly to Kampala the next morning as the chopper could not fly at night.
“…whereas Tayebwa’s team had accepted to sleep in Mbarara, they were convinced by BAR’s CEO Barak Orland that he could ably fly them to Kampala, despite being nighttime,” the Nile Post reported on Sunday morning.
“The team would later board another chopper. Fire was later seen coming from the cockpit of the chopper, prompting panic, especially from the passengers. The pilot decided to land crash and that is when Tayebwa’s security team engaged in the rescue of the principal and other passengers.”
