The public, especially on social media has turned guns onto Minister for ICT and National Guidance,Dr.Chris Baryomunsi, over his visit to opposition strongman, Dr.Kizza Besigye at Luzira Prison.
Baryomunsi on Sunday said he had visited Besigye and urged him to drop the hunger strike.
“I have just visited Col Dr Kiiza Besigye at Luzira prison in the presence of his personal doctors,” he said.
“I have given him counsel and asked him to resume taking food as the government fast-tracks the transfer of his case from the Court Martial to a civil court,” Baryomunsi said.
Following this announcement, members of the public have taken to social media to blast the minister and government at large over the manner in which the matter has been handled.
“Is this the fundamental change you promised Ugandans? Human rights are being abused and you go ahead to mark February 16 as Janan Luwum day accusing Amin of the same violations. How different are you? History will be so harsh on you,” one Prince Allan said on X.
“Thank you for visiting Col.Dr.Kiiza Besigye Hon Chris. Its vital that he receives a fair trial and is treated with diginity throughout this process. His wellbeing is paramount and any failure to ensure fair treatment would reflect poorly on our government. Lets work together to uphold his rights and secure his release promptly if he is not guilty,” one Pamela said.
Hassan Abubakar said, “ Giving ‘counsel’ to a man you unjustly jailed? Bro, you are not his lawyer, you are his captor. This is like an arsonist giving a fire victim heat management tips.”
Whereas a section of commentators applauded Minister Baryomunsi over his visit to the opposition strongman, majority were angry at the way he has been treated and have since called for his immediate release from prison.
