Authorities in Kampala have compiled a list of musicians, comedians and promoters accused of promoting politics and hatred during their concerts.
Lubaga Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Anderson Burora told journalists that as security, they have compiled the list which has since been sent to the Inspector General of Police.
“We have realized that some promoters organize concerts basing on their(promoters) political affiliations, also some musicians and comedians have turned their work into a political battleground. We think these promoters, musicians and comedians should stick to entertainment and not politics because their promoters want music or comedy,” Burora said.
“We assume the supporters who come for these concerts do so to enjoy entertainment and not for politics . We think this needs to change.”
The Lubaga RCC said on that account, they have compiled a list of two musicians, six comedians and four promoters who have turned their concerts into political battlegrounds.
“We have sent the list to the IGP for his consideration going forward when clearing their requests for holding concerts and events. We have also recommended to him that before he takes action, he can also engage these said persons because they might be doing it out of courtesy or without any ill-motive or agenda but based on their consistency, we think it is intended.”
Burora said they have recommended that these promoters, musicians and comedians should be engaged and that if the IGP feels it not important, he can hold onto the advice given to him.
The Lubaga RCC said the move follows festive season’s concerts in which tribalism and political cards played out.
“In one of the concerts, we almost experienced a fight because of these political affiliations. We have comes out early before the issue goes out of hand.”
The development comes on the backdrop of a spat between singers Priscilla Zawedde, aka Azawi and Reagan Muhairwe also known as Ray G.
The spat has seen fans for both camps use tribal sentiments against each other and it reached the climax on December, 31, during the Enkuuka concert when Ray G was belted with bottles as he performed.
