UNEB has said all the prisoners who sat for the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) have passed, marking a significant milestone in prison education programs.
The results, released by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) on Thursday indicated that inmates from Luzira Upper Prison School, and Mbarara Main Prison Primary School excelled in the national exams.
Out of the 59 inmates who sat PLE from Luzira, four passed in Division 1, 36 in Division 2, and 13 in Division 3.
At Mbarara Main Prison Primary School, all 37 candidates passed, with four achieving Division 1, 20 in Division 2, 10 in Division 3, and three in Division 4.
Notably, all the candidates were male, except for one female inmate from Luzira.
Although 71 candidates were registered at Luzira, UNEB said only 59 sat for the exams.
Speaking at the PLE results release, UNEB Executive Director Mr. Dan Odongo highlighted the overall increase in participation in 2024, with a total of 797,444 candidates sitting for the exams compared to 749,347 in 2023.
These candidates represented 14,883 schools, reflecting a rise in national enrollment.
Of the total candidates, a majority 524,025 (65.7%) were beneficiaries of the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program, while 273,419 (34.3%) attended private schools.
