Police have started investigating circumstances under which fire gutted a garage in Wandegeya, a Kampala suburb, burning 13 vehicles beyond recognition.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesgiyire said a government vehicle was among those burnt beyond recognition in the fire that broke out at around 4am in the morning

“The facility housed a garage, parking lot , furniture shop and hub of other different things including a kitchen, woodwork , stores of timber and wigs for women. A lot of items including vehicles , mattresses and furniture among others were destroyed in this fire,” Owoyesigyire said.

“The vehicle burnt were 14 but 13 of these were burnt beyond recognition that we couldn’t identify the number plates.”

Owoyesigyire also addressed reports that the fire is linked to a protest by members of a savings and credit society( Sacco) .

“There is an allegation of arson that some members as they shared end of year sacco money yesterday, it wasn’t enough and there were voices that came out showing dissatisfaction and went away making serious warning of action to be taken which has caused suspicion among people who lost property.”

He said investigations into these allegations have kicked off, noting that one person, identified as Ssenga Nakakaawa was a target of a mob by those who lost their property .

Owoyesigyire said police rescued her and is currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station.

“We are going to expand our inquiries into all these allegations but  also forensic experts will continue doing their work .”
