Opposition political party, JEEMA has asked National Unity Platform president, Robert Kyagulanyi, also know as Bobi Wine to retract statements he made recently regarding the anti homosexuality law while appearing on BBC.
“We call upon you to retract your accusations and demonstrate your commitment to fostering a culture of respect and cooperation with fellow leaders. Due to the public nature of your pronouncement, we will not keep this letter private. We are sharing it with fellow leaders for the record,”JEEMA Secretary General, Mohamed Kateregga said in a letter to Kyagulanyi.
While appearing in an interview on the British broadcaster after his ban to travel to UK was rescinded, Kyagulanyi said a number of NUP MPs who supported the anti homosexuality law are working with the ruling NRM government.
Kyagulanyi who was 10 years ago banned from stepping foot on UK soil over his song that advocated for burning of homosexuals seems to have changed his stance and in the interview with BBC, he seemed to blame all MPs who passed the law.
However, in a December 5, 2023 letter, JEEMA has expressed disappointment at Kyagulanyi’s remarks which the opposition political party says are evasive.
“I am writing to express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the accusations you made against your colleagues and members of parliament from the opposition,” Kateregga.
He reminded the NUP president that the anti-homosexuality law was introduced by Asuman Basaalirwa, the JEEMA president and was in line with the party’s principles.
“This law was overwhelmingly supported by the whole house, including NUP MPs, who risked their lives to protect our cultural and religious values. Your response, in which you accused these dedicated individuals of betrayal, has deeply troubled members who are seeking to see a change of leadership in our country,” he said.
According to JEEMA, whereas Kyagulanyi has his own right to support homosexuality, it is not right to demonise fellow leaders with contrary views.
