Ivan Cyubahiro, 36, a broker from Kisoro District, has been arrested for posing as John R. Musinguzi, the Commissioner General of the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), to defraud unsuspecting victims.
Cyubahiro, who resides in Bunamwaya in Wakiso district, allegedly solicited contributions for a wedding for the Commissioner General’s daughter.
To make his scam believable, he used Musinguzi’s portrait as his WhatsApp profile photo.
“Our intelligence team tracked and arrested Cyubahiro on Saturday. Investigations are still ongoing, and Cyubahiro will be arraigned in court soon,” said Robert Kalumba, the URA spokesperson.
Investigations has indicated that Cyubahiro is a repeat offender after previously being arrested in June 2024 for impersonating Mzee Kananura, a prominent businessman in Kampala.
However, he denied the allegations , noting that it was his friend, Patrick Muwonge who brokered the deal and designed the invitation cards.
He, however, expressed remorse, saying, “I deeply regret what happened. If given a second chance, I promise to steer clear of such acts.”
The URA spokesperson urged the public to remain vigilant and report fraudsters.
“URA does not handle cash payments. Always come to our offices for all tax-related matters,” he emphasized.
